Generator installation in Tampa Bay is a hurricane-season decision made in a hurricane-season panic, and that is the worst time to make it. Permit review alone runs two to four weeks in Pasco, Hillsborough and Pinellas. A storm in the forecast does not move the county along.

There are three ways to do this, and they cost and behave very differently.

A **portable generator with a transfer switch** is the entry point. The generator lives in the garage until you need it, you roll it out, you start it, you plug it in. The electrical work is the transfer switch and the inlet, and it is what makes the setup legal and safe instead of a backfeed hazard. You still go outside in the storm to start it.

A **whole-home standby unit** sits on a pad outside, runs on natural gas or propane, and starts itself. When the utility drops, the automatic transfer switch senses the loss of voltage, starts the generator, and moves the house onto it in about ten seconds. You may not be awake for it.

A **partial-home standby** does the same thing for a shorter list: the refrigerator, the well pump, medical equipment, a few lights and one zone of AC. Smaller unit, smaller gas load, simpler install.

Sizing is where most quotes go wrong. A load calculation is not adding up appliance wattage. Running watts and surge watts are different numbers, and a central AC compressor pulls far more current in the first second of startup than it does once it is turning. A generator sized to the running load alone will stall or trip on that surge. We count the refrigeration, the compressor's starting amps, a well pump if you have one, and whatever else has to stay alive.

We do not publish a price for this, and that is deliberate. The number depends on which generator you choose, what it runs on, how far the gas line has to travel, and whether the panel can take the tie-in as it stands. Anyone quoting you over the phone is guessing. The $89 diagnostic covers the load calculation and the site assessment, and you get a written number before anything is ordered.

The install itself is two days when nothing surprises us. Generac units sit on a precast pad rather than a poured slab, so there is no cure time to wait out. The gas line gets trenched to code depth, sleeved where it crosses under anything, and pressure-tested before it is connected — this is licensed gas work, not something bundled in as an afterthought.

Before the crew leaves, we check amperage on each leg with a clamp meter to confirm the load is balanced, then kill utility power at the main to simulate an outage. A properly wired transfer switch starts the unit within about ten seconds and moves the load over on its own.

The permit is the long pole, not the wiring. We file it, and the orange tag stays posted at the panel until the county inspector signs off. License ER-13016759 covers generator work in all three counties.

When You Need It /

Signs You Need Generator Installation

You Lost Power for a Week After the Last Storm

That is the most common reason people call, and they usually call in September. The install takes two days; the permit takes two to four weeks. Starting in June means it is done and inspected before the season gets serious.

You Are on a Well

No power means no water — not just no lights. A well pump is one of the loads that makes even a partial-home standby worth it, and its starting surge is one of the numbers people forget to size for.

Someone in the House Depends on Equipment

Oxygen concentrators, CPAP machines, refrigerated medication. These are the cases where automatic transfer matters more than price — nobody has to be awake and able-bodied to start anything.

You Work From Home

A full day of outage is a full day of lost work. A partial-home unit covering the office, the router, the refrigerator and one AC zone usually costs less than people assume before the load calculation.

You Already Have a Portable and Run It on an Extension Cord

Then the fix is a transfer switch and an inlet, not a new generator. Backfeeding a house through a dryer outlet kills utility linemen, and it is the one setup we will tell you to stop using today.

The Process /

What to Expect

01

Load calculation and site assessment — $89

We count the loads that have to stay alive and the surge each one draws at startup, then look at where a pad can go, how far the gas line has to run, and whether your panel can take the tie-in. That $89 applies toward the job, and the written number comes out of this visit.

02

Pad, gas line and rough electrical

The precast pad goes onto a leveled gravel bed, checked on both axes — no concrete cure time to wait out. The gas line is trenched to code depth, sleeved where it crosses under anything, and pressure-tested. Conduit gets run for the transfer switch while the trench is open.

03

Transfer switch and panel tie-in

The generator gets set and anchored, the load leads run from the panel into the automatic transfer switch, and the control wiring runs from the switch to the unit. This is the part that decides whether the changeover is clean, and it is done leaning into a cabinet that was not built for a grown adult.

04

Testing, permit and inspection

We clamp each leg to confirm the load is balanced, then kill utility power at the main to simulate an outage. The unit should be running and carrying the house in about ten seconds. The orange permit tag stays at the panel until the county inspector signs off, and we schedule that visit.

FAQ /

Frequently Asked Questions

How much does generator installation cost in Tampa Bay?

We do not publish a number for this one, because it would be a guess. The price depends on which generator you choose, whether it runs on natural gas or propane, how far the gas line has to travel, and whether your panel takes the tie-in as it stands. The $89 diagnostic covers the load calculation and the site assessment, and you get the real number in writing before anything is ordered.

How long does generator installation take?

Two days on site when nothing surprises us — pad and gas line on day one, generator and transfer switch on day two. The permit is the long part: review runs two to four weeks in Pasco, Hillsborough and Pinellas, and the county inspection is scheduled after the physical work is finished.

Do I need a permit for a generator in Florida?

Yes, in all three counties we cover. We file it and schedule the inspection. The orange permit tag stays posted at the panel until the inspector signs off — that closed permit is what your insurer and a future buyer will ask for.

What size generator do I need?

It comes out of a load calculation, not a rule of thumb. Running watts and surge watts are different numbers, and a central AC compressor draws far more current in its first second than it does while running. A unit sized to the running load alone will stall on that surge. We count the refrigeration, the compressor's starting amps, a well pump if you have one, and anything medical.

Natural gas or propane?

Natural gas if the street has it — no tank, no refills, nothing to run out of mid-outage. Propane if it does not, which means a tank sized to how long you want to run. Propane installs need a new or upgraded tank, and that is a line item worth knowing about before you sign anything.

Does a generator installation need a panel upgrade first?

Sometimes. An older or fully loaded panel may not have room for the transfer switch tie-in. We check that during the $89 assessment and tell you up front rather than discovering it on install day. If a panel upgrade is needed, doing both in one trip costs less than two separate jobs.
